How much longer should a threaded steertube be for a given headtube-and-headset-cup height? 20mm?
  • jerryjerry Riding Level: 4,339
headtube length + total stack height of headset = steer tube length

if you're using a headset that has nut/locknut configuration (ck 2nut, velo orange, cane creek, etc.), you can add or subtract spacers in between the two nuts if your steer tube is a little long.

if your tube is a little short, get a CK gripnut because they are the shit

    This photo.

I forgot that this was in my parents' garage. It's a Wilier Triestina TT thing converted to a city bike with a tiny front wheel and a 700c rear wheel. Also flat bars and the wheels are tubulars that I'm not sure will inflate. Gotta throw some Stan's up in thurr.

I can't really use it for anything. WTF should I do with it?

    Donate to the Veloseum? ;)

Less-serious answer: Fixiefy it and blow minds out front of Stumptown.
Slightly more-serious answer: Do it up right and blow minds at an OBRA time trial.

It's got vertical dropouts so no fixaying. I spose it'd be cool to get some pursuits and bar-end brake levers for it.

But shit, I don't have room for another bike.
  • MiguelMiguel Riding Level: 2,322
Get rid of it. You don't need it, you don't want it. Nobody actually rides those bikes and blah blah. I bet you would be happier with the $300 you could probably sell it for

I sold my entry model gitane funny bike for about $700 to japan. Some major collectors over there.

48/18 is leaving chain too slack or too tight.

How much of a chain link does a tooth equal?

In other words, by my how many fewer chainring teeth must I reduce my ring so my my chain will be perfect tightness?
  • KendraKendra Riding Level: 1,356
you're adjusting your chain ring to fit your chain? that doesn't seem logical...
  • CekteCekte Riding Level: 1,167
Pretty hard to give a definite answer. Too many variables between frame & rear triangle size, geometry, length of chain, length of drop-outs, etc.

Have you tried a 1/8" half link?

Tell me this is just a paint issue and not my head tube cracking... image
  • MiguelMiguel Riding Level: 2,322
That's a crack in the headtube
Get it checked out by someone who will tell you that
  • DuderDuder Riding Level: 218
    @jerry perfect.
Chainstay is measure center of BB to center of vertical dropout, correct?
Looks like 41.49cm and 46x18 should work minus one link.

    Coaster brake vertical dropout, slam.

@Duder correct, glad that worked for you

    @bouticrackedheadtube DEAD
  • bouticrackabouticracka Riding Level: 308
    I'm done with bikes.
  • jerryjerry Riding Level: 4,339
that bike is done with bikes!
  • KendraKendra Riding Level: 1,356
    @bouticracka
    Get a Mtb!
  • JoshJosh Riding Level: 824
Yeah cuz Portland has great mountain biking.
  • JoshJosh Riding Level: 824
ps how do headtubes crack anyway...?
  • MiguelMiguel Riding Level: 2,322
brake and rock back and forth
bump the front wheel into something
    incorrect headset installation
  • jerryjerry Riding Level: 4,339
yeah a crack in the front of the headtube like that is probably a slightly oversized headset pressed poorly into a slightly undersized headtube, then repeatedly abused via pothole/curb/etc.

the leverage of a front end impact makes the top front of the headtube want to split open
  • MiguelMiguel Riding Level: 2,322
    Karma maybe
  • LurveyLurvey Riding Level: 416
wellll, stock fork is gone, so prob front impact.
  • jerryjerry Riding Level: 4,339
    bam, mystery solved
  • bouticrackabouticracka Riding Level: 308
Is this fixable at all? Or rideable? I mean I'm not sure how long it's been there, but there hasn't been any noticeable difference when I've been riding.
  • bouticrackabouticracka Riding Level: 308
Or is it just going to explode someday and give me a face full of pavement...
